IELTS Listening Practice

Here is a set of ten practice activities specifically designed to help learners prepare for part four of the IELTS listening test, which is the most difficult part.

These activities are designed as a stepping stone to the last part of the IELTS listening test, so they are a little shorter and a little easier than the actual test - perfect for learners who are struggling.

Each one features a three-minute academic talk with six multiple choice questions. As in the actual test, they are in the same order that you hear the answers. Each one also comes with an accompanying transcript.

This is custom GPT number eight.

This GPT allows learners to practice PART 2 of the IELTS speaking test.

You can write out the answer or use the microphone for input on your phone.

Once you give your answer, the GPT will give the following detailed feedback, matching what examiners mark:

 Available now, there is a new vocabulary activity on Road To Grammar.

The purpose is to learn five words at a time. The way it works it like this:

1 Review flashcards of five words. The flashcards have a picture example and the definition.

2 Then try five MCQ questions on the words you have just learned.

The activity is randomized from a bank of 300+ words, so you can try the activity as many times as you like.

Most of the words are from the Road To Grammar Instagram account, so you may recognize them if you are a follower.

More words will be added later.

Objective and Subjective Language

An excellent skill for an ESL learner to have is the ability to distinguish objective and subjective language, and then to be able to write objectively when the situation requires it.

In business, it is important to state issues objectively when writing reports. In the academic world, it is important when writing a paper.

The reading web app now has a notes section. Just like the main app, it can be viewed on mobile too!

Also, and unfortunately, some of the activities developed in HTML5, including the reading app, will not work in Chrome if you refresh the page. This is a problem with the current version of Chrome and will be fixed when they update Chrome in a couple of weeks. If you face this issue, please try using Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer instead!

Ultimate Reading Practice

Ultimate Reading practice is a web app that has 50 short reading activities for upper-intermediate and advanced learners.

The passages are 100-200 words each and each one has four or five questions, mainly multiple choice. Each one has a word count and the difficulty level shown according to the CEFR levels.

These should provide great practice for any learner who will be taking the IELTS or TOEFL tests, or similar.

The web app can be viewed on tablets and phones, including the iPad.

A guide to answering these types of questions will be available next week on the site.
